We all want to love and to be loved. The Bible tells us that God is love. We are told that God loves us. So why do we sometimes doubt that we are loved? Why do we have a hard time loving ourselves and others? Could it be that what we love, how we love, who we love, and why we love is determined by our response to God’s love? Paul describes three ingredients of God’s love. We can experience true love when we accept these three ingredients that God supplies…
The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith. (1 Timothy 1:5)
And so the three ingredients of love are: Purity, Transparency, and Faith. Purity only comes from God when we accept His righteousness. We obtain His righteousness by opening our heart to Jesus who is knocking at our heart’s door. When He comes into my heart, everything changes. So at the core of love is Jesus. Love comes from the heart. Love is grounded in a relationship with God, not in rules. But when I accept Jesus into my heart, He brings purity that will affect everything I do. (See Proverbs 4:23)
The result of a pure heart is transparency. Jesus living in my heart gives me the courage to be transparent. I can only truly love and accept love when I take off the mask I hide behind and let people see who I really am. Transparency is a way of life. When I let people see who I am, fear loses it’s grip in my life. (See 1 John 4:18)
Faith in God, in others, and in myself is the final ingredient of true love. When used in the context of love and relationships, we think of the word trust rather than faith. But it’s the same word in the Greek. Without trust, conflict is divisive and destructive. Without trust, I am suspicious of everyone. Without trust, I am alone in the world. Without trust, there can be no love.
What do you fear? Will you live from the heart? Will you allow the purity of Jesus into your heart? Will you be open and take off the mask? Will you trust Jesus with your heart? Are you ready to experience love today?
