The Cure – 2 Solutions

I have a problem with standardized tests of which I’ve been subjected to far too many times in my life! There are many The Cure Coverquestions on these tests that I completely understand and feel like I know the answer before I even look at the options listed. I then read each possible answer, a-e, with care. I easily dismiss three of the five answers. But there are two answers I find to be correct. I ask myself, What am I missing? I read the question and the answers again. There are still two answers that are correct in my mind. I have to choose one, so I do. I have never failed a standardized test. And occasionally I’ve even done well. But I have never aced one. Never been in the top echelon. I think that’s because I too often have seen two solutions rather than one.

Peter and John were brought before the the Sadducees who did not believe in the resurrection. They were upset with Peter and John who were preaching about the resurrection of Jesus quite convincingly. As a result, there were many who began to believe in Jesus as their Savior. Brought before the high council, Peter and John were asked, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” Peter boldly proclaimed one solution, one answer to life. In Acts 4:12, Peter said, “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Can it be true? Only one solution to my sin problem? I must say that I have thoroughly tested this axiom. I have tried to overcome pride, impatience, anger, a poor attitude, selfishness, and so much more with my own solutions. To be clear, many of my solutions work for a while. I behave better, think better, and even love better with my own solutions. I read books, apply their principles in my life, and I become a better person. But then comes along another twist on an old problem, and suddenly my solution doesn’t work anymore. In fact, the only solution I have found to work in every situation in my life is Jesus. Complete, absolute trust in Jesus.

When I put all my trust in Jesus and put a check by His name on the test, I have peace that confirms my understanding of my life and my place in this world. The lyrics to the song, “No Sweeter Name” summarize my experience with the realization that there is only one solution – Jesus!

No sweeter name than the name of Jesus
No sweeter name have I ever known
No sweeter name than the name of Jesus

You are the life to my heart and my soul
You are the light to the darkness around me
You are the hope to the hopeless and broken
You are the only truth and the way

I don’t know what it is, but we are constantly looking for a better way, even when we have the best and only way. It just seems to be part of the nature of man in this world of sin. But it doesn’t have to be that way. We have a choice, just like on all those standardized tests I took for so many years. And just like on those tests, there is only one right answer in life. His name is Jesus. The solution to your sin problem and mine is to trust in Jesus. Sometimes the simplest answer is the right answer. It’s your choice. Will you choose Jesus today?
